Bulgarian Monks Call for Opposition to Kosovo's Independence

Bulgarian monks from the Zograph monastery (pictured) declared that recognizing Kosovo would bring God's anger upon Bulgaria.

Monks from the Bulgarian Zograph monastery on Mount Athos peninsula in Greece have sent a letter to the Bulgarian parliament demanding that the government oppose Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence.

According to the monks, if the cabinet recognizes independent Kosovo, Bulgaria will become an accomplice to "historical injustice" and will experience God's anger.

The monastery brotherhood also warned that recognizing Kosovo might trigger secessionist activities in other countries on the Balkans, including Bulgaria.
