Book “launched”

Domnita Dumitrescu, professor of Spanish linguistics at California State University, Los Angeles, has just published, in collaboration with Dan Munteanu Colan, professor of Romance languages at the University of Las Palmas (Canary Islands, Spain) a Spanish grammar for the use of speakers of Romanian. Published by the Niculescu Publishing House, the 368-page book, entitled Limba spaniolă, is part of the series Vrei sa stii daca stii..., and contains 1850 grammar exercises, with an answer key and grammatical explanations. The book was "launched" at the Cervantes Institute in Bucharest, on July 1, 2005, and the event was advertised in several Romanian publications, including România libera, Cronica româna and Ziua. The director of the Cervantes Institute, Ioana Zlotescu Simatu, introduced the speakers, who were: Professor Tudora Sandru- Mehedinti, who presented the book, the Niculescu Publishing House associate director, Ms. Niculescu, the book editor, Ms. Teodora Pavel, and Domnita dumitrescu, who spoke on her own behalf and also read a Spanish text sent by her co-author, Dan Munteanu, for the occasion. A champagne reception followed. The audience included numerous college professors, students, and researchers, including Dr. Marius Sala, from the Romanian Academy, Dr. Sand Renheimer-Rîpeanu, former dean of the College of Foreign languages at the University of Bucharest, etc. A former professor of Spanish at the University of Bucharest, Domnita Dumitrescu still enjoys a great popularity in her native country, due to the Spanish textbooks she published there before emigrating to the US, in 1984, and which many students considered to be their “bible” for many years. Since 1987, she has been teaching at California State University, Los Angeles, from which she earned an important teaching award last fall, becoming one of the University's Outstanding Professors. In 2000, she has won the Teacher of the Year Award from the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, the largest professional organization of Spanish educators in this country, with a membership of around 15,000.
